A Tragic Loss and Unprecedented Responsibility

Teresa’s life changed when her husband was tragically killed in the South Sudanese civil war. Left to care for their six children, her burdens grew heavier as the war claimed many of her relatives, resulting in her assuming responsibility for 15 additional orphaned children. She was a widow, now caring for 21 children.

Teresa fled South Sudan with the children and arrived at the Rhino Refugee Settlement Camp in Arua, Uganda in 2022. While a haven for those fleeing conflict, the camp offers very basic living conditions. The absence of electricity and running water adds to the daily struggle, making even the most basic tasks a significant challenge. Teresa’s illiteracy compounds her difficulties, as she lacks the means to access even limited resources or opportunities.

Khayamandi Foundation provides scholarships to Teresa’s younger children ages 3-6 years, enabling them to attend the New Life Early Childhood Development Center located in the Omugo 6 section of the settlement. This preschool not only offers a sound early education but also ensures that the children receive one nutritious meal a day, a vital benefit in a place where resources are scarce.

Recognizing that Teresa’s needs extend beyond educational support, the Khayamandi Foundation is also working to address her immediate needs. Providing essential food, clothing and toiletries, helps alleviate some of the daily struggles of running a household with 21 children. This assistance makes a significant difference in their lives.

As Teresa and her children navigate their new reality, the compassion and resources provided by Khayamandi Foundation offers a lifeline, helping them to rebuild their lives and find hope in the midst of adversity. Partner with Khayamandi to help Teresa and other families just like her.
