Construction Skills and Life Lessons

Jonathan learned how to use a “level” properly in the Hands and Heart Skills Development program in Knysna, South Africa. But beyond simply learning to level surfaces, Jonathan discovered a deeper metaphorical meaning. He was able to apply the principle of the level not just to construction but to his life as well. “When you get one aspect level, you can sort of gage how much leveling you need to do down the line,” he stated.

In 2022, Jonathan was accepted into the Hands and Heart Program, marking a turning point in his life. Living in a community where opportunities were scarce, Jonathan saw the program as a chance to learn practical skills and build a future for himself.

The Hands and Heart program is designed to empower young men and women to develop to their full potential and to seize both employment and personal growth opportunities. A 6-month course teaches basic handyman skills in electrical, plumbing, workplace preparation, draughtsman, tiling, building construction, and carpentry.

As Jonathan learned new skills, his confidence grew. He was not only leveling floors and walls but also leveling his own ambitions and aspirations. The program not only equipped him with technical skills but also instilled in him a sense of discipline, perseverance, and self-belief.

Jonathan excelled in the course and is now employed by Hands and Heart to help teach other students these same skills and life lessons.

Khayamandi Foundation played a crucial role in making Jonathan’s journey possible. Their support and funding enables Hands and Heart to offer comprehensive training to numerous young men and women, empowering them with skills that open doors to employment and personal growth.
